Axle Shafts Pulled

Little more done today. Pulled the axle shafts using the old using the drum as a slide hammer technique. The shafts, bearings and cups look pretty good, so clean them up a bit and repack them and stuff them back in.

Managed to loosen the pinion shaft nut with a bit of ingenuity and an old leaf spring, but still confused as to whether the pinion shaft oil seal is there? Is this it pressed in? The only things that came off were the nut, (missing a washer...), the pinion yoke and the dust shield which sits on there very loosely and rattles around.

Would you suggest someone that has never rebuilt an axle to take on a rebuild? I'm working on a 50 CJ-3A and am having a hard time finding an axle shop that won't charge me a small fortune to even look at them. Any words of wisdom?

I would say that anything that you set your mind to you can do. The jeep is an example of wonderfully simple engineering that got the job done and done right. I'm learning alot as I go along, doing much of it for the first time. If you are getting into the axle you'll likely need a hub puller and possibly a slide hammer. Check out the build thread in my online forum for more detail and join the forum and show off your 3A and ask any of us for advice. We'd be glad to help!
